sairam,

Sairam,
In a satsang held in the divine presence in UK on April, 2016, a devotee asked how to cope with the current lifestyle and still focus on God.
And here is what Swami said:
Question: Swami, lifestyles at the moment can be quite stressful and I find that it distracts me from God and makes me feel quite distant and disconnected. How can I withstand my current lifestyle and still be able to focus on God?
Swami: What is coming in your way? Lifestyle is coming in your way? Is that what you are saying? Then give up that lifestyle which comes in your way! For the sake of God, anything can be done – that is the purpose of life. If that lifestyle is coming in your way, you have to change your lifestyle. You cannot have both air and water in a pot at the same time. If it is full of air, there can be no water; equally, if it is full of water, there is no room for air.
Long ago, there was a devotee of Adi Shankara, who said to his guru, "Swami, many of my likes and dislikes, wants and desires, are becoming obstacles in the path of spirituality. They will not go away. What should I do?"
Adi Shankara pointed towards a man who was pulling his buffalo by a rope. He then asked the disciple, "Who is attached to whom? Is the buffalo attached to the man or the man attached to the buffalo?"
The disciple said, "The buffalo is attached to the man. That is why the man is in front and the buffalo is behind." Then what did Adi Shankara do? He took a knife and cut the rope! The buffalo ran away and the man was running behind it. (Laughter)
You become attached to things and that is why it becomes an obstacle in your path. Whatever becomes an obstacle should be dispensed with. If you have the ability of King Janaka, who lived as the king of the whole of Mithila, yet was totally detached, then it is ok.
If you are not, then you may choose to live like Adi Shankara, in order to keep the attractions and attachments away. What will happen? A few will call you insane or a fool or mad – let them; you know the truth. You don't become something just because that is what they call you; it is a matter of your understanding. They don't eat for you; they don't breathe for you; they don't sleep for you. You have to do it for yourself. In the same way, if you want God, you will have to make amendments to your lifestyle. There is no other way. You cannot have earth and heaven, too. If you want to be in heaven, you will have to leave the world behind.
With Swami's blessings and guidance, there will be two 2017 Public Events in California USA: Northern California, Bay Area in Santa Clara, June 18, Sunday
and Southern California, Costa Mesa, June 24, Saturday
