Be Inspired. Act. The short and sweet month of February 2018 packed many memories for all Sanjeevani family members. Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur launched 4 new specialty clinics, India's FIRST FREE OF COST Pediatric Cardiac Sub-Specialty Clinics. The Department of Public Health at Sai Sanjeevani achieved an important milestone of screening 10,000 children from schools of Rural Chhattisgarh even as the TELEMEDICINE initiative at Sai Sanjeevani, Palwal strengthens in association with Sai Amrutham, Kolkata and the Divine Mother & Child Health program initiative in Chikballapur District, Karnataka continued with an increased number of doctors and volunteers.   Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur in association with Chitanyam, Mumbai celebrated the Spirit of Sanjeevani  in the form of UMANG DIWAS, where alumni of the Center came together to express their boundless joy for having received gifts of life. Our Nursing institution seamlessly conducted a day long conference – CARDIAC NURSING : THE 21st CENTURY WAY, which integrated human values with medical skills where in over 300 Nursing students from the city participated.   Prof Dr. Rajendra Prasad Patury , Sir Arthur Cotton Geospatial Chair Professor,  Andhra University and  Dr Arvind Kumar , Scientist, Department of Science & Technology, Government of India visited Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care & Research, Palwal, Haryana and advised the Centre of possible research initiatives . We were delighted to have with us an exuberant and enthusiastic volunteer in Vasudha Mehra from Australia, who had the blessed opportunity to experience many facets of this temple of healing and also played the role of a mentor to Sanjeevani team members in the departments of HR, dietary services and Nursing college at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur.    The month concluded with Advanced Life Saving Skills Training to the staff of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur and also to the Nursing students by Dr Rajsheker Kollipara from USA, thus nourishing the environment of constant learning.  Do stay in touch. Your Sai Sanjeevani Team SURGERIES  (February  2018)   91 Pediatric Cardiac surgeries were conducted  in February 2018 and 4213 surgeries have been conducted at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur since Inception in Nov 2012, with patients coming from all over the country and other developing countries. OUT PATIENT SERVICES (February  2018) 970 outpatient registrations were recorded during the month - 497 new pediatric cases,  and 473 revisit and followup pediatric cases. 577 Patient Pre registrations were recorded this month. Out of a total of 1480 ECHOs performed this month, 497 are new pediatric cardiac cases as shown in the table below. Also 410 post-operative inpatient & TEE screenings and 473 revisit and medical follow up ECHOs were performed.   INTERVENTIONS (February  2018) 24 Pediatric Cardiac Interventions were conducted in January 2018 and 83 since the commencement of services at Naya Raipur in December 2017.   PEDIATRIC CARDIAC OUTPATIENT SERVICES  (Nov 2016 - Feb 2018) Since the inception of the Hospital in November 2016, 3312 pediatric cardiac outpatients haven been screened and managed with patients coming from 20states of the country - Assam, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh,  Manipur, Rajasthan, Uttarahand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. PEDIATRIC CARDIAC SURGERIES AND INTERVENTIONS  (Apr 2017 - Feb  2018) The first Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Centre was conducted on 18 April 2017. 263 Pediatric Cardiac surgeries have been conducted since April 2017 at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care & Research, Baghola, Palwal, Haryana. 345 Pediatric Cath Interventions were conducted till Feb 2018. Pediatric Cardiac Surgeries (Feb 2018) Pediatric Cardiac Interventions (Feb 2018)                                                 All Services are rendered Totally Free of Charge In view of the growing requests for fetal echo and certain other types of heart diseases, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur launched 4 new clinics . It is to be noted that this will be India's FIRST FREE OF COST Pediatric Cardiac Sub-Specialty Clinics.  The Pediatric Cardiac Sub Speciality Clinics will provide treatment options and specialized services in the following specialty divisions of Cardiovascular Medicine: 1.      Fetal Echocardiogram: Heart problems in the developing baby may result from abnormal development of the heart (congenital heart disease), heart rhythm disturbances, genetic conditions and health problems and conditions in the mother that may have an effect on the baby, including illness, medication and other exposures. The goals of the Fetal Cardiac Program are to ensure that families receive the highest quality care for potential heart problems during pregnancy, further improve the detection rate of cardiac anomalies thereby raising the standards of cardiac imaging during pregnancy. A fetal echocardiogram performed at 20 weeks is ideal for providing a thorough cardiac evaluation during pregnancy and allows for families to explore all options for the pregnancy if an abnormality is detected. 2.      Pediatric Cardiac Arrhythmia Center:  The Pediatric Cardiac Arrhythmia Center will offer diagnosis, management and treatment for multiple problems associated with heart rate irregularities. The symptoms can be  palpitations, fainting and  seizures. Our electrophysiology team is committed to the diagnosis and treatment of these arrhythmias so that patients can return to a normal, active lifestyle as soon as possible. 3.      Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension and Right Ventricular Failure Clinic:  It is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in your lungs and the right side of your heart .Pulmonary hypertension is a serious disease that can become progressively worse, even fatal, if not properly treated  The Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Clinic at The SSSH Naya Raipur offers an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of PH. The PH Clinic will seek to provide the most current, in-depth, and comprehensive evaluation and treatment available for PH  4.      Pedatric Cardiomyopathy Program (CHF) and Cardio-Oncology Clinic:  A.    In the   Cardiomyopathy Clinic, cardiologists trained in the diagnosis and treatment of   cardiomyopathy will provide a comprehensive assessment and conduct diagnostic tests to determine the most appropriate therapy for you. A multidisciplinary team will provide you with coordinated care.  Patients and their relatives will be informed about the importance of screening for   Cardiomyopathy in your family members and the role of genetic testing as a possible screening tool. B.     The goal of the team in the Cardio-Oncology Clinic is to ensure people can receive the most appropriate cancer therapy, while minimizing their risk of heart complications and treating any heart conditions. Doctors evaluate and treat heart conditions before, during or after cancer therapy as needed. •         Discussing cancer treatment options with oncologists for people. •         Monitoring and treating heart complications that may develop during cancer therapy An interesting case was treated during one of these special clinics, as follows   Sadhana Kumari, a 4 year old girl was referred all the way from Puruliya, West Bengal for an abnormally fast heart rate with long lasting episodes, no medical facility nearby was comfortable in handling this complex case.  She arrived on a hot afternoon in early November in clear distress with the symptoms of very fast heart rate, lethargy, excessive sweating, loss of appetite and activity with occasional vomiting when attempted to eat. She was evaluated, echocardiography showed a structurally normal heart with reduced function but her ECG revealed a very abnormal rhythm of the heart and a diagnosis of Ectopic Atrial Tachycardia was made after which she was started on medications .  After a span of 4 weeks, as the symptoms persisted albeit less frequently, an additional medication was added in a slightly higher dose. On the next followup, the parents appeared  completely relieved that their child was totally symptom free and extremely active. ECG suggested that the abnormal heart rhythm had been completely controlled upon and the child's overall condition as well as heart function had significantly improved.  This is an example of a unique set of patients with Rhythm disturbances of the heart that can be completely controlled by medication and the child can lead a symptom free life. Thus SSSSH has endeavored to conduct special clinics every Saturday, to touch and heal these unique little hearts with unusual yet easily treatable disorders.    Aortic Valve Repairs at Sai Sanjeevani, Palwal Feb 2018 Aortic valve repair is a technique that is gaining popularity in children because of the lack of an ideal valve substitute in this patient population. It has the advantage of preserving the native valve and the potential for growth. Frequent repair can put off the need for valve replacement until full growth is achieved and more options with prosthetic valves are available. The individual child may require a combination of 2 or 3 techniques to accomplish an acceptably competent valve. The techniques must be individualized to the child's pathologic condition. Congenital aortic valve regurgitation in early life may be particularly difficult to repair, because several of the important geometric features of the valve may be developmentally abnormal. From 1990 to 2000, a total of 21 patients underwent aortic valve repair for aortic regurgitation at Loma Linda university medical centre, California , who followed up these patients for a maximum of 11 years and they recommend repair of the aortic valve in the pediatric population. Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care & Research, Palwa did 4 cases of aortic valve repair in the month of February, 2018. All four were associated with ventricular septal defect and subaortic membrane. The children did well after surgery, and three of them have been discharged and one is recovering in the ICU. Repair of congenital aortic valve disease is at best an evolving art, the science behind which is complex . HOME AFTER 46 DAYS IN THE ICU         Baby Saif Raza , 4 months old whose father is a car driver in Jharkhand and mother a housewife was noted to have difficulty  to breastfeed and rapid breathing which affected his growth- weighing 3.5 kg ( the weight of a newborn) was referred for early surgery after being diagnosed with obstructed TAPVC.  He underwent open heart surgery- TAPVC repair in the ensuing days and had a very stormy post operative course marked by prolonged need for ventilator, chest drains, antibiotics and seizures. However after a prolonged ICU stay of 46 Days he was finally discharged to the postoperative ward and is on the way to home. ----------------------------------------- THE TASTE OF LIFE'S FIRST ICECREAM          Baby Gunwantika Shegaonkar, a 3 ½  Year old girl from Maharahstra who underwent intracardiac repair for Tetralogy of Fallot   said that she had never ever tasted icecream as her parents felt she would fall sick after eating it. Her affirmative nod on being asked if she would like to taste it now would have melted a thousand hearts.  On the day of her discharge, after an assurance from the doctors that she had recovered fully from her surgery , she was given a special treat with icecream by the ward nursing staff and her joy knew no bounds getting to taste Icecream for the first time in her life. The Sai Sanjeevani alumni presented AHAM BRAMHASMI, a dance drama reminding humanity of its essential DIVINITY. Choreographed by Team YOGINI from Kolkata, 10 children who were operated at Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur played presented this 40 minute dance drama to a packed audience at the Dr C Rajeswari Auditorium, Sri Sathya Sai Sowbhagyam.  This endeavour helped the Sai Sanjeevani reconnect and build the alumni of Sai Sanjeevani, messengers of the Divine Tenets of Love & Service and has only strengthened our resolve to continue to nurture these seeds of transformation for years to come. Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Institute of Nursing & Allied Healthcare Sciences, Naya Raipur that commenced with 9 students under the M Sc Medical Surgical Nursing Course  (Cardiothoracic Care) in November 2017, conducted its first State Nursing Workshop on the topic - CARDIAC NURSING - THE 21st CENTURY WAY The Technical session of the conference had presentations from Dr Ashish Katewa, Medical Director & Dr Atul Prabhu, Deputy Director, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, Naya Raipur and Mrs Manokamana Shaiju, Principal & Mrs Nithiya, Associate Professor, Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Institute of Nursing, Naya Raipur. Dr Vasantha Nair and Mr Shantanu Dixit from Chaitanyam - Institute for Human Excellence in Healthcare, inspired the nursing delegates to understand the importance of love, care & compassion in this noble care giving profession. Yogiji, Shri Richard Gorrell enthralled the audience through his participative session on the basics of Yoga for cardiac healing. The 2 days celebration concluded with a soulful flute instrumental by Shri Vivek Taunk, an artist par excellence from Raipur. Spreading the Divine mission "Love All, Serve All" Beyond the Hospital ...  Into the Community ...   @ Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur The Divine Mother & Child Health Program of the Department of Public Health and Research at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh accomplished an important milestone in February 2018, of completion of screening more than 10,000 rural children in government schools and Anganwadis, since inception of the program in 2013. Launched in June 2013, this rural child health screening and early intervention program, is based on the guidelines of Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) program of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, with focus on the 4 Ds in children namely – congenital Defects, Deficiencies, Diseases and Developmental delays, and contributes to the health of children through timely detection, prevention, education and medical management. Since inception till January 2018, 10,357 children have been screened across 52 government schools and 28 Anganwadis in 3 major blocks namely Arang, Abhanpur and Dharsewa in Raipur district in Chhattisgarh. At the end of health screening in each school, a feedback of the health assessment is discussed with the Principal and teachers followed by Health Education session for school students and teachers using audio-visual aids. After health check-up in each school, a team of optometrists conduct vision test for all students. Students who require detailed eye check-up are then taken to an eye institute in the city in the hospital's vehicle for further examination and Spectacles are provided to children as per ophthalmologists' prescription. These services are also free of cost to the children. Students who require squint surgery are assisted to complete the formalities under Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) to enable free surgery for the same. In the past 5 years, out of the children screened, 11 have been diagnosed with congenital heart disease, out of which 6 have been operated and 5 are under medical management. Dental treatment including oral prophylaxis, extraction, restoration and root canal treatment has been provided to around 250 school students. Sai protein has been distributed to 2300 children of Anganwadis and primary school children. An innovative concept was launched in January 2018, training students of higher secondary schools - grade 9th to 12th - on first aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), to enable students provide basic first aid in any emergency situation till medical help is available, which is crucial in reducing the severity of any emergency. The team conducted 20 training sessions across 8 Government Higher secondary schools involving 1850 students in rural Chhattisgarh. @ Chikballapur, Karnataka The month of February was more fulfilling as the program touched more number of tender hearts not just in health screening but also by health education on primordial aspects such as personal hygiene and healthy eating habits, etc. However, antenatal screening and school children's health screening activities happened with continued momentum. Feb 6th-8th were filled with joy as the team of DMCHP consisting of 16 doctors, 4 dentists and about 22 volunteers visited 17 schools to screen more than 1600 children. About 80 children were found to have one or more problems needing the attention of a specialist. Feb 18th being third Sunday and a team of DMCHP consisting of 45 doctors & medicos and 35 volunteers visited 22 PHCs to provide ante-natal services to 978 pregnant mothers. On 24th Feb, in collaboration with Annapoorna team, we were part of Integrated Rural Development Program in which engineering students of Nagarjuna College of Engineering & Technology conducted health education at different schools. At a school in Korcharyapalya, 52 engineering college students conducted health education sessions in small groups of 6-8 children to 228 kids. They were also made to spend enough time to understand the possible social issues or hindrances in maintaining their health and hygiene.   TELECONSULTATION SERVICES Sai Sanjeevani, Palwal with Sai Amrutham, Kolkata    On the occassion of the 1st anniversary of  Sai Amrutham - Kolkata, a specialty Outpatient Clinic, Telemedicine services were conducted at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care and Research in collaboration with Sai Amrutham- Kolkata. As part of the OPD services, Sai Amrutham has identified close to 10 children for ECHO consultation. This ongoing program is making available quality  and totally free cardiology consultation services for the poor of Kolkata without having to travel to far off locations. VASUDHA  MEHRA Vasudha is an HR professional who has lived in Australia since she was 4 years old. Since childhood Vasudha's inspiration is Sri Sathya Sai Baba, who has also been the air beneath her wings. Her passion to follow her dreams and motivation to constantly discover more about herself brought her to Raipur to volunteer for a month , particularly to share her love and joy with the little hearts at Sai Sanjeevani. BLS  &  ACLS  TRAINING  by DR  RAJSHEKER  KOLLIPARA Dr Rajshekhar Kollipara, a renowned Anesthetist and a pain management expert from US volunteered his time to train the nurses at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital Naya Raipur. Being a certified American Heart Association trainer, he exhaustively covered critical aspects of Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He also gave lectures on other topics such as infection control, significance of hand washing, nutrition and healthy living. YOGA FOR HOME CARE  by YOGIJI RICHARD GORRELL 35 3rd year B Sc students from SCOPE College of Nursing, Raipur visited Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Centre for Child Heart Care, Naya Raipur, for an observer tour. The students underwent a 2 hour training session on YOGA FOR HOME CARE by Yogiji Richard Gorrell, who currently is conducting a 6 week YOGA  CERTIFICATE  COURSE for the students of Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Institute of Nursing & Allied Healthcare Sciences.   Prof Dr. Rajendra Prasad Patury , Sir Arthur Cotton Geospatial Chair Professor,  Andhra University and  Dr Arvind Kumar , Scientist , Department of Science & Technology, Government of India visited our hospital and advised the Centre of possible research initiatives . Patri  Ji , renowned master of meditation addressed participants at Sri Sathya Sai Sowbhagyam on 10th of Feb. He emphasized the importance of a calm mind and attitude for success in all life aspects. He then facilitated a meditation session to conclude the evening. Our friends & family from Japan, guided by Sister Harumi, visited Sai Sanjeevani this month. From distributing chocolates to conducting prayers for operated children to volunteering at the canteen, they spread their warmth and love throughout the Hospital and look forward to nurturing some of the Sai Sanjeevani Health initiatives in Japan.
