El canto es sólo un paso hacia el progreso espiritual.

En un satsang celebrada en la presencia divina en Kuala Lumpur, Malasia, el 11 de agosto de 2017 cuando se le preguntó acerca de la importancia del canto Rudram, esto es lo que dijo Swami:

Pregunta: Swami, ¿podría explicar los beneficios del canto del Rudram, y cómo nos puede ayudar con nuestro progreso espiritual y en el logro de la liberación?

Swami: El canto es sólo un paso hacia el progreso espiritual. Paso a paso, paso a paso, que se mueve hacia su destino, que es la auto-realización. Se inicia con el canto o la escucha de la Rudram. En el Bhakti Marga (camino de la devoción), Shravanam es el primer paso, que consiste en escuchar el sonido de las cosas buenas, como el nombre de Dios, mantras, vedas o Upanishads. Esto transformará que, sólo por el sonido en sí mismo, incluso si usted no lo entiende.

Por ejemplo, incluso si usted está sentado aquí y se oye ruido discordante música, su mente será excitado y sus pensamientos se verá afectado. Question: Swami, could you please explain the benefits of chanting the Rudram, and how it can help us with our spiritual progress and in attaining liberation?

Swami: Chanting is only one step towards spiritual progress. Step by step, step by step, you move towards your destiny, which is Self‐realization. It begins with chanting or listening to the Rudram. In the Bhakti Marga (path of devotion), Shravanam is the first step, which involves listening to the sound of good things, such as the name of God, mantras, Vedas or Upanishads. This will transform you, just from the sound itself, even if you do not understand it.

For example, even if you are sitting here and you hear loud jarring music, your mind will be excited and your thoughts will be disturbed. At the same time, if you listen to very peaceful, soothing music, immediately you will feel your mind is at rest. Therefore, shabda brahma mayam – the sound is as sacred as divinity. The sound of the Rudram is designed in this way, because these mantras were not composed by poets, but rather received by the rishis in their meditation, from feelings emanating from their hearts, immediately taking the shape of words formed through their lips.

Just as you burst into a tune or song when you are happy or sad, likewise, these sounds came from the mouth in language form, with the description of Lord Rudra. Thus, these sounds are very sacred. Listening to or chanting the Rudram can help you a lot in having better concentration and in developing a much calmer mind, which is a basic, fundamental need on the spiritual path. A stable, pure mind, is extremely important.

So, the Rudram can help you take the first step – but, if you understand the meaning and meditate on it, it will help you grow much deeper within. The Rudram says that Rudra is the God who destroys. What does He destroy? It is said that He is always angry. What is He angry about? He is angry about all the evil that is done. Therefore, one prays to him to destroy the evil or wickedness within, and thereby redeem oneself. When you pray thus, His grace will definitely come upon you. It will help you become a better person. As you become purer in your life, you will become nearer to your true Self.

The truth is, you only are That. All that which is covering you, the dust and rust, gets removed. That is what the Rudram can do for you. If you chant it and listen to it, it will help you to take the first step of cleansing yourself of all your impurities, allowing you to move closer to the divinity that you are.
