What Started in Chhattisgarh, grew to Haryana and now our presence of Life is felt in Maharashtra.    As the centre in Mumbai was still gearing up for its first surgery, a promise of gifting 34 Lives has been made by Cricket Legend, Shri Sunil Gavaskar. The Mumbai Centre performed successfully its first surgery on 8 month old Baby Ananya from Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, 7 May 2019, in the Sreemayee Sanctum of Child Heart Surgery.    The entire Sai Sanjeevani family came together in working beyond their call of duty to make this reality possible. Sanjeevani welcomed friends from around the country to celebrate this new beginning - a beginning of life, a beginning of love. Sri Indulal Shah Centre for Training & Education was also inaugurated at the Centre, in the honour of Sri Indulal Shah, a centenarian and an inspirational Social Reformer, who dedicated his entire life to the service of poor and needy of India and other countries. A Medical Team from the Raipur Centre has been on the third Humanitarian Mission to Fiji, to provide for Pediatric Cardiac Surgeries to children from South Pacific Islands. The First Screening Centre has been inaugurated in Fiji, which will further aid the screening of the children. The Palwal Centre has completed 1000 Cath-Interventions in the span of 22 months. On 2nd May 2019, the Padma Bhushan awardee shared his heartfelt appreciation for the selfless work done by Sanjeevani, and expressed his commitment towards the cause of Healing Little Hearts. In the presence of the Chairman of the Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust, Mr C Sreenivas, he has shared his experiences at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centres of Child Heart Care.   “Having visited the Sanjeevani centres at Raipur and Palwal, I saw the magnificent work that is being done. When Sanjeevani came to Mumbai, and Mumbai being where I grew up, there was a more immediate connection and I really wanted to help in some way.   I am what I am, known because of the centuries that I scored… and if I may make this little contribution where for every century that I have scored, I could help save a life, I would feel blessed - and that is the reason for this opening.   This is a new innings for me. This is my third innings. Playing the game was my first innings, being involved with media was my second innings, I do believe that My third innings will be the best of them all. The whole point is that as in the game of cricket, the opening batsmen lay the foundation for the rest of the team to come forward and make a contribution. My request is for you to spread the message and to tell the world of the work that is being done here towards a healthier and better world.”                                                                                Mr Sunil Gavaskar   Baby Ananya, Sanjeevani Mumbai's first Child, after being operated successfully on 7 May, 2019 LOVE BEYOND BOUNDARIES   Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children's Heart Screening Centre in Fiji Islands was inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of Fiji, Sri Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama on 24th April 2019, in the presence of the Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete and Mr C Sreenivas, Chairman Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust among others. This is South Pacific’s first Children’s heart screening center. This Centre was opened within the current Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre In Nasese Suva. The aim of the screening center is to provide free screening for children with heart disease and to build a database of patients with congenital heart disease.   This screening Centre screened 76 children in last week of which about 20 children have been selected for surgery. The surgeries are currently ongoing by an International team of Medical Professionals from India, Australia, United States of America and Oman led by Dr Ashish Katewa, Director and Chief Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon from Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care, Atal Nagar, India.     Muskan Stands Tall   Muskan Yadav, a bright child of 10 from village Umariya in Madhya Pradesh was born with congenital heart disease, VSD and PDA and hememalia, a condition in which one of the limbs is underdeveloped. Sanjeevani healed her heart as she underwent her surgery, but we couldnt bear the idea that she will go to school on crutches again! Aishwarya Trust from Chennai, who also work towards surgeries for CHD made it possible for her to walk unaided by completely supporting the process of getting Muskan a prosthetic limb and Ottobock Centre were more than happy to help in Muskan standing tall.   Hearts of Gold   Virat is the fourth child in the family of Mahesh and Ganga Pramanik from a village in the interiors from Dhanbad in Jharkhand. A humble family of an ambulance driver and housewife, they were asked why they had a fourth kid when they came to Sanjeevani for the treatment of the child. “He is from our heart”, the parents say proudly. Virat was found by the family on the steps of a temple in their village in 2015. they didn’t think twice before deciding to raise him as their own after trying to track his biological parents. Virat also suffers from a genetic disorder known as the Noonan Syndrome which affects the development of the child to age appropriately. Virat’s father also runs the ambulance on charity. He only takes payment from the people who can afford to pay, not from the daily wage labourer. “Ganga is the reason Virat is happy, a mother should decide to give her love. She has love and empathy, Virat is with us because of her resolve to love.” Virat has been successfully operated and the parents are full of blessings for the team. Families like Virat’s are those that help us understand the essence of love. To give and to not ask in return is the greatest form of gifting and what better than love, unconditional and pure, towards a child.   Isolated Supracardiac PAPVC with a large VSD- A rare treatable entity   Abhinav Kumar, 1yr 4mth old boy, hailing from Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand was a very symptomatic child who was breathless right from birth with worsening condition in the recent past. He had been stuck with more than a couple of episodes of respiratory tract infection demanding hospitalisation in the past 2 months. After a number of institutional referrals, he was referred to Sai Sanjeevani by a District Collector from Uttarakhand.   Abhinav underwent a series of investigations and a diagnosis of large perimembraneous ventricular septal defect(VSD) with a partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection of right upper pulmonary veins(PAPVC) to superior vena cava with intact interatrial septum was established under the expert guidance of our cardiology team. He was a syndromic child who had undergone a major thoracic surgery in the new born period for the correction of a tracheo esophageal fistula.   The physiological impact of the enormous shunt resulting from VSD and PAPVC explains the symptomatology of the child. PAPVC adds as an obligatory shunt to the pulmonary system resulting in PAH. The child had evidence of a subclinical infection at the time of admission but considering the magnitude of the shunt, it was decided to take up the child for surgical correction as these children may sometimes succumb to pneumonia in the waiting period.   The child underwent surgical correction in the form of a Warden’s procedure wherein the SVC segment carrying the right upper pulmonary veins was baffled to left atrium after creating an atrial septal defect and the ventricular septal defect was closed with a treated pericardial patch. The child had a smooth, uneventful postoperative course and was discharged in a stable condition on the 5th postoperative day.   The association of Ventricular septal defect with Isolated PAPVC of pulmonary veins without an ASD is a very rare occurrence and very few reports are published in literature till date. If left alone untreated, this association puts the child at a higher risk of early development of irreversible pulmonary artery hypertension, and an early surgical correction makes a big difference to the quality of life of the child who otherwise invariably would succumb to the disease.         Ante Natal Diagnosis of CHD facilitated Early Treatment   Poonam, a single mother was in the 7th month of her pregnancy when she was informed of an abnormality in her unborn child’s heart. She was referred to the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care for a foetal echo in which the baby was diagnosed with critical pulmonary stenosis, a condition where the pulmonary valve is congenitally so narrow that it doesn't allow blood to flow in to the lungs. The mother and the family were counselled regarding the long-term prospects and need for immediate intervention after birth.  The baby was born on 3rd March and was immediately transferred to a neonatal unit. An Echo cardio gram was performed, the findings of foetal echo were confirmed and a plan made to perform balloon valvotomy of pulmonary valve.  The procedure was performed on the fifth day of life and the baby was transferred back to the neonatal unit on the next day.  She started breast feeding immediately and was discharged home in stable condition.  Baby of Poonam, now named Jeeva, is from Raipur and she has come back for a follow-up in April and is now doing well. She is the youngest child who has undergone a major Cath Intervention in the Centre.     Option between Surgery and Cath: A first time in Sanjeevani! 10-year old Mannat Gupta from Jammu & Kashmir used to have frequent chest infections, since early childhood, needing three hospitalizations till date. Her parents came to know about our hospital through social media and attended our OPD this month and she was diagnosed to have multiple VSDs (anterior mid-muscular VSD 9mm and posterior muscular VSD 7mm) upon evaluation. The child’s parents were counselled about the need for VSD closure and parents were given option of surgical or device closure. They opted for device closure, and thus the child was admitted. During the procedure, Mannat had two big VSD shunts and luckily the posterior muscular VSD could be crossed easily. This was closed with device via the leg-vein approach. The other bigger VSD (anterior mid-muscular VSD) was also closed during the same sitting via the neck-line approach. Both devices were simultaneously released in stable position. Child was observed in CCU for next 48 hours and was discharged successfully. This is the first of its kind of device closure of multiple VSDs at Sai Sanjeevani. Mannat escaped having a scar mark which would have been a certainty due to multiple defects had this device closure procedure not been consented to by the parents. The recovery time was also significantly reduced due to the Cath intervention. Cath lab services at Sai Sanjeevani continue to be a boon for children with CHD!  Cath Lab in Palwal completes 1000 cases   Cath lab services at Sai Sanjeevani continue to be a boon for India & beyond- with children being treated without open-heart surgery, allowing them to return home scar-free within 2 days of their procedure! The Cath lab facility at Palwal has now served over 1000 children, a stupendous feat achieved in under 22 months! Hearty congratulations to the Cath & Cardiology team led by Dr Yogesh Sathe! Beyond Borders 1-year old Ibrahim is the fourth of five children of Mr. Khalid, a simple labour worker with no educational background. Over the last year or so, Ibrahim spent most of his time in and out of hospitals, with his father raking up almost 3,00,000 Rupees of debt to pay for Ibrahim’s treatment. A good Samaritan in Afghanistan made arrangements for Ibrahim to be sent to Sai Sanjeevani, where he was treated for Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Ibrahim had severe cyanosis (bluish discoloration) when he first came to Sai Sanjeevani, but he left the hospital premises healthy and full of life.   Gift of Life, Love between Nigeria and India is here to stay Ten children from Nigeria came to Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care, Atal Nagar with support from the Gift of Life Foundation. These ten children and their families got a new lease of life at Sanjeevani as they made it their home. Some of the children walked for the first time, some sat up for the first and the parents were full of tears and smiles as the children were healed. This April, the Hospital welcomed 40 third year BSc students for a month long clinical posting wherein they had an opportunity to train under the guidance of the experienced Sai Sanjeevani medical and nursing team across all departments.   Dr Ali Arastu - Visiting Doctor from Stanford Dr Ali Arastu, a Fellow in Intensive Care from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford was in Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care, Atal Nagar for his rotation of 4 weeks. He observed and trained in the Operating Rooms and the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units of the centre.    Dr Ali has shared with us that the exposure and the programmatic volumes offered in the Sanjeevani Centres are unimaginable in any part of the world. "The work that's done is quite extensive and intensive as compared to other units. There is a learning curve which is extremely high and allows for more experience and skills too medical  professionals from developed countries.  I would be honoured to come back to a Sanjeevani Centre again and spend some time. It has been an amazing experience with the senior surgeons including Dr Ashish Katewa and Dr Ragini Pandey and the entire team was supportive."   Medical Conferences Dr Ragini Pandey, Senior Consultant in the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery from Atal Nagar centre was invited to deliver a main lecture on "Diagnostic and Surgical Approach in Fallot's Tetralogy" at University Hospital of Ancona, Italy. Dr Ragini Pandey also spoke about the Challenges faced in Developing Countries, in the field of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.  Dr Krishna Manohar, Head, Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery from the Palwal Centre was a speaker at the 6th CVTS CME conducted at UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology & Research Centre, Ahmedabad, Gujarat He has spoken on the topic, “VSD Classification, Pathophysiology & Management” Dr Yogesh C Sathe, Head, Department of Pediatric Cardiology from the Palwal Centre was invited to speak at CARDICON 2019, Annual Conference of Cardiological Society of India, Bihar Chapter held at Darbhanga Medical College, Darbhanga, Bihar.
