Sai Ram - Makara Sankranti Sai Darshan and Divine Messages

Sent by Brother Mayur Madurai - m.mmv96@gmail.com

Loving SaiRam, today January 14, 2013 being the festival of Makara Sankranti, was inspired to Share these Divine Swami images and Messages.  Pongal-Sankranti greetings to all!

Today’s festival is an extremely important one for Bharatiyas (Indians). It is a festival to celebrate the glory of the Sun God. The Sun moves every month from one sign of Zodiac to the next. Sankranthi, meaning “sacred changeâ€, occurs every month as the Sun moves from one house of the Zodiac to another. But special sacredness attaches to the movement of the Sun to Capricorn (Makara-Sankranthi).

The sun appears serene and peaceful.
The days have become shorter.
And the chill wind is blowing.
The fields are ripe with golden crops.
Marigold flowers are blossoming like garlands on the banks
of rivers.
The farmers are rejoicing and singing.
The sweet festival of Sankranti has arrived,
filling our homes with the newly harvested grain.
(Telugu Poem)

Makar Sankranti’ is the first Hindu festival of the solar calendar year, falling around January 14. ‘Makar’ means Capricorn and ‘Sankranti’ is the transition from one place to another place. Transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn during the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere (Uttarayana) is known as Makar Sankranti.  In His Discourses, Swami has alluded to the word ‘Sankranti’ and said that ‘kranti’ means Change. Swami has said that "Kranti" means change. Hence, everyone should change and become happy and blissful. True happiness, He has said, is only in union with God and cannot be found in the temporary and fleeting pleasures of the world. Everlasting bliss emanates from within and He exhorts everyone to find the God within and claim their legacy of bliss.

Today being The festival of Sankranti, when the Sun God is worshipped, Bhagawan explains what are the lessons we can learn from the Sun.

Consider the service the Sun (Surya) does to this world! This is within the daily experience of all. The Sun is the source of all life forms on this planet. Without His rays, the earth will be a desolate waste. He draws up into the sky the waters of seas and lakes, and from the clouds showers rain on the crops. He is theDharmadevatha (God of righteousness), scattering His rays equally on all. The service He does and the happiness He contributes is something no one else can. Despite doing this for millions of years, without any pride, He moves about unattached to the consequences of His energising mission of service. The Sun is thus teaching us that when one is oneself, there will be no exhaustion or elation, disgust or pride. That is, the task of Surya is not something imposed from outside and taken up under compulsion. That is why it is performed systematically, and smoothly. - Geeta Vahini, Chapter 6

Once during the Sankranti Festival, Draupadi happened to be in Lord Krishna’s residence. Lord Krishna was enjoying and sharing with them fresh sugar cane of the season. While cutting a piece of cane, his little finger got injured. Blood began to ooze out. The queens ran to their apartments and started frantically searching their wardrobes for a piece of coarse cloth to bandage the wound. But Draupadi, who was seated at the Lotus Feet of the Lord, at once tore a piece off her sari and bandaged the wound. The queens returned with pieces of cloth only to find that the wound had already been attended to by Draupadi.

Years rolled on and Draupadi was being humiliated by Dussasana in the court of Dhritarashtra at Hastinapur. He was trying to disrobe her. She cried out in the open assembly for help and prayed to Lord Krishna to come immediately to her rescue and save her honour. Lord Krishna who was then at Dwaraka hundreds of miles away, readily responded to her sincere prayer. He shook the little finger, the self same finger that was bandaged by a piece of cloth torn from her sari by Draupadi. Lo! Yards and yards of cloth flowed into the court covering the body of Draupadi. Thus Draupadi’s small act of service and sacrifice brought to her later on, the Lord’s Grace and protection in her great calamity from which none of the her heroic husbands, the Pandavas, could save her.

A good act is a Godly act for which God rewards at the appropriate time.

We Love You Swami!
